Myth and Mask

Just now written and spoken words in the West are again overflowing with the unctuous words about the „free West“ and about „Western values“, whereby I like to ask with the latter word: in Dollars or in Euros?

The center of this alleged paradise of mankind is – of course – the USA! One could know, the USA are not only built on genocide and slavery, have not only stolen about one_third_of_their_area from Mexico. They have fought countless wars for the benefit_of_the_super-rich. Lynching black Americans has long been a „white national sport“; U.S. racial laws were inspiration_for_the_Nazis. And in a number of U.S. states, these race laws were in effect until the 1960s. The Nazis owed their rise to power in no small part to the support of U.S. capitalists. Incidentally, Henry Ford was „honored“ with one of the highest Nazi decorations.

The U.S. political system is based on two parties that are largely „electoral clubs“ through which puppets of the super-rich, sponsored with vast sums of money from the super-rich, are installed at all levels. The climax then consists in a President as „Puppet in Office“. However, if he should show sense of responsibility, humanity and conscience, so to speak „jump out of the track“, like Kennedy, then …! That this system in the USA leads to more and more social misery and deep division is obvious. So the USA itself is truly not the „ideal figurehead“ for today’s globalized, but US-led capitalism! The myth of the democratic and „value-based“ West actually needed a mask long ago. What was there to do now?

The ideal opportunity presented itself after the collapse of the Nazi regime in Germany. Instead of severely punishing the country (as previously envisaged with the „Morgenthau Plan“), the U.S. power elite gradually came up with an almost brilliant idea. This idea had not only to do with the experience related to the Treaty of Versailles. It was also probably not only driven by the concern to „immunize“ the people in the western part of Germany against the lure of Socialism and Communism. One would create something that would not only make the U.S. appear as a mild and „benevolent hegemon,“ but could provide the ideal mask for capitalism. The old Federal Republic of Germany was made into this mask.

Intermediate remark: Overall, of course, the Marshall Plan with the corresponding aid for many states of war-torn Europe also played a role. However, this also had the function of export aid for the U.S. economy, and thus to make Western Europe once again a functioning trading partner for the U.S. economy, which was now in transition from a war economy to a peacetime economy.

In the three Western occupation zones, people were in any case extremely grateful not to have fallen into the hands of the power whose country had been so barbarically devastated, namely the Soviet Union, but ultimately to the supremacy of the USA, which had not experienced any German devastation in its own country. Mildness up to the use of heavily_incriminated_Nazis (whom they wanted to use for the „anti-communist“ fight) was already a „good“ basis for West German loyalty. But the US power elite quickly recognized the chance to build up an attractive mask for the East.

The production of this German mask was also not only about masking the conditions in the USA itself by the „own product“, but also about disguising the Western capitalist global system. Germany had already ceased to be a colonial power since the end of the First World War, while Great Britain and France maintained their colonial power and almost seamlessly transferred it into „neo-colonial“ plunder. The USA had long since made almost the whole of Latin_America its „colony“, despite all the „anti-colonial rhetoric“. It should also be noted that the Bretton Woods Agreement made almost the whole world a „dollar_colony„. In fact, however, the Western economic supremacy was and still is essentially based on the hegemonic plundering of the global South.

If the old Federal Republic was now allowed to participate quickly and „graciously“ in this plundering, and if a society was established there that also permitted a maximum of formal democracy and personal freedoms, as well as distributed the wealth, although not evenly, but clearly more evenly than in the U.S. center and other Western metropolises, then one had an ideal figurehead (which soon received the name „social market economy“ in Germany). This could then not only show the world: so wonderfully capitalism works, which then allegedly „has nothing to do with colonialism and neo-colonialism“, but comes from the „system superiority“ of just capitalism! And at the „system border“ of the partly permeable Iron Curtain in the divided Germany at that time, the „model“ could unfold then special „radiant power“ which reached far into the Eastern Bloc (of course supported by strong radio stations).

The trade unions were given a relatively strong role (the „Big Brother“ even had a clear hand_in_their_formation), which was undoubtedly also seen as useful in preventing German capital from becoming too independent and overconfident. Politics and especially the „services“ were interspersed with people who „carry on two shoulders“; in this context, their burden of Nazi past dependence was also useful (see Gehlen et al.). All too political „leftists“ had their wings clipped, as with the ban of the KPD and the „Radical Decrees“. But, there is no other way to put it, people in the Federal Republic of Germany lived generally securely, as well as in relative prosperity and individually as free as nowhere else in the world – an „island of the blissful“. The ultimately „artificial“ basis for this, however, was hardly apparent to anyone, if anyone cared at all. This is not to minimize the diligence and discipline in the reconstruction by the citizens.

After the end of the first Cold War and the reunification of Germany, part of the „showcase“ was cleared away, but the advantages of Germany’s charisma for the U.S. power elite were still great, especially to pull the former Eastern European member states of the Eastern Bloc into the orbit. This succeeded because of the illusion: look how „great“ things are now for the people of the former GDR, even if soon many there did not necessarily feel that way! Also in the questions of the historical „system comparison“ just (the divided) Germany plays an important, just also misleading role. This is strongly based on the fact that the unequal preconditions of both German states are not taken into account, as also in the comparison of Western Europe and Eastern Europe.

It should also be noted here that the constructed narrative on postwar Germany was also useful in giving the population of the West the illusion that the U.S. wars were to be as much of a success story for the people in the countries under attack as the „rebuilding of postwar Germany“ under U.S. Leadership.

The future of Germany as well as EU-Europe may hold other things in store. Cold War number two is here, the expansion of the „West“ on the European continent to the extreme is practically_finished for the time being (which does not exclude that the US empire dreams of further expansion to the East with the defeat of Russia and its fragmentation). It is true that the effect of the „mask“ on some parts of the world is still „useful“, but now for US power the focus is probably on using Europe, and especially Germany, as a deployment area „to the east“ and, if necessary, as a potential war theater.

For the U.S. confrontation with its declared main adversary, China, and its environment, the „German mask“ plays an even smaller role. China has proven that its system is capable of lifting a large part of its population out of poverty without excessive plundering of the global South. Without wanting to idealize the Chinese system, I think that for many people in the world it will not be Eurocentric „value gossip“ that will be the deciding factor, but the question of what political developments in a country will bring about in terms of well-being for the large number of its people.

If the citizens in the European societies and especially in Germany do not wake up and do not force their politicians to develop their own role independent of the USA (for which they would first have to understand their previous role), the future looks truly dark!

But one final remark must also be made: After Germany, with the help of parts of an unscrupulous U.S. power elite, had become a fascist monster in the previous century, bringing horror to large parts of the „old world,“ they had unctuously renounced Nazi mania. Now Germany together with EU-Europe is cleverly made the patron saint of Ukrainian Nazi mania. A Ukrainian president, who is in bed with this Nazi gang, is paid homage in the Bundestag with standing ovations. „Sportpalast 2.0″?! For people who look from the outside on this happening here, the mask might probably finally fall!

Gerade jetzt quillt Geschriebenes und Gesprochenes im Westen wieder über von den salbungsvollen Worten über den „freien Westen“ und über „westliche Werte“, wobei ich bei letzterem Wort gerne frage: in Dollar oder in Euro?

Zentrum dieses angeblichen Paradieses der Menschheit sind – natürlich – die USA! Man könnte wissen, die USA sind nicht nur auf Völkermord und Sklaverei aufgebaut, haben nicht nur etwa ein Drittel ihrer Fläche von Mexiko geraubt. Sie haben unzählige Kriege zum Nutzen der Superreichen geführt. Das Lynchen schwarzer Amerikaner war lange „weißer Volkssport“, die Rassengesetze_der_USA waren „Inspiration_fuer_die_Nazis“. Und in einer Reihe von US-Bundesstaaten galten diese Rassengesetze bis in die sechziger Jahre. Die Nazis verdankten ihre Machtergreifung zu nicht unerheblichem Teil der Unterstützung US-amerikanischer_Kapitalisten. Übrigens wurde Henry_Ford mit einem der höchsten Nazi-Orden „geehrt“.

Das politische System der USA fußt auf zwei Parteien, die weitgehend „Wahlvereine“ sind, durch die mit Unsummen von Geld der Superreichen gesponserte Marionetten eben dieser Superreichen auf allen Ebenen installiert werden. Der Höhepunkt besteht dann in einem Präsidenten als „Marionette im Amt“. Sollte dieser allerdings doch Verantwortungsbewusstsein, Menschlichkeit und Gewissen zeigen, sozusagen „aus der Spur springen“, wie weiland Kennedy, dann …! Dass dieses System in den USA zu immer mehr gesellschaftlichem Elend und tiefer Spaltung führt, ist ersichtlich. Die USA sind also selbst wahrlich nicht das „ideale Aushängeschild“ für den heute globalisierten, aber US-geführten Kapitalismus! Der Mythos, die idealisierende Erzählung vom „Land der Freien“ als Zentrum des demokratischen und „wertebasierten“ Westens brauchte eigentlich schon vor Langem eine Maske. Was war da nun zu tun?

Die ideale Gelegenheit bot sich nach dem Zusammenbruch des Nazi-Regimes in Deutschland. Anstatt das Land schwer zu bestrafen (wie vorher mit dem „Morgenthau-Plan“ angedacht) kam die US-Machtelite nach und nach auf eine nahezu geniale Idee. Diese Idee hatte nicht nur mit den Erfahrungen im Zusammenhang mit dem Vertrag von Versailles zu tun. Sie war auch wohl nicht nur von der Sorge getragen, die Menschen im westlichen Teil Deutschlands gegen die Verlockungen von Sozialismus und Kommunismus zu „immunisieren“. Man würde etwas schaffen, das nicht nur die USA als milden und „gütigen Hegemon“ erscheinen ließe, sondern die ideale Maske für den Kapitalismus abgeben könnte. Zu dieser Maske wurde die alte Bundesrepublik Deutschland gemacht.

Zwischenbemerkung: Insgesamt spielte natürlich auch der Marshall-Plan mit den entsprechenden Hilfen für viele Staaten des kriegsgebeutelten Europas eine Rolle. Dies hatte aber auch die Funktion einer Exporthilfe für die US-Wirtschaft, und damit, Westeuropa wieder zu einem funktionierenden Handelspartner für die nun in Umstellung von der Kriegswirtschaft zur Friedenswirtschaft befindliche US-Wirtschaft zu machen.

In den drei westlichen Besatzungszonen war man sowieso überaus dankbar, nicht der Macht in die Hände gefallen zu sein, deren Land man so barbarisch verwüstet hatte, nämlich der Sowjetunion, sondern letztlich der Oberhoheit der USA, die im eigenen Lande keine deutschen Verwüstungen erlebt hatten. Milde bis zur Benutzung schwerstens belasteter Altnazis (die man ja auch für den „anti-kommunistischen“ Kampf nutzen wollte) war schon eine „gute“ Grundlage für westdeutsche Loyalität. Aber schnell erkannte wohl die US-Machtelite eben die Chance, eine attraktive Maske gen Osten aufzubauen.

Bei der Herstellung dieser deutschen Maske ging es auch nicht nur darum, die Zustände in den USA selbst durch das „eigene Produkt“ zu maskieren, sondern auch darum, das westliche kapitalistische Globalsystem zu verschleiern. Deutschland war schon seit dem Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges keine Kolonialmacht mehr, während Großbritannien und Frankreich ihre Kolonialmacht aufrecht erhielten und fast bruchlos in „neokoloniale“ Ausplünderung überführten. Die USA hatten schon längst bei aller teils „antikolonialen Rhetorik“ fast ganz Latein-Amerika zu ihrer „Kolonie“ gemacht. Anzumerken wäre hier zwischendurch auch, das das Abkommen von Bretton-Woods fast die ganze Welt zu einer „Dollar-Kolonie“ gemacht hat. Tatsächlich beruhte und beruht die westliche wirtschaftliche Übermacht allerdings eben ganz wesentlich auf der hegemonialen Plünderung des globalen Südens.

Ließ man nun die alte Bundesrepublik schnell und „gnädig“ an dieser Plünderung teilnehmen, und errichtete dort eine Gesellschaft, die auch ein Höchstmaß an formaler Demokratie und persönlichen Freiheiten zuließ, sowie den Reichtum zwar nicht gleichmäßig, aber doch deutlich gleichmäßiger als im US-Zentrum und anderen westlichen Metropolen verteilte, dann hatte man ein ideales Aushängeschild (das in Deutschland bald den Namen „soziale Marktwirtschaft“ erhielt). Dieses konnte dann nicht nur der Welt zeigen: so wunderbar funktioniert der Kapitalismus, der dann angeblich „nichts mit Kolonialismus und Neokolonialismus zu tun hat“, sondern kommt aus der „System-Überlegenheit“ eben des Kapitalismus´! Und an der „Systemgrenze“ des hier damals teils durchlässigen Eisernen Vorhangs im geteilten Deutschland, konnte das „Modell“ dann besondere „Strahlkraft“ entfalten, die weit in den Ostblock hineinreichte (natürlich durch starke Radiosender unterstützt).

Die Gewerkschaften bekamen eine relativ starke Rolle (bei ihrer Formierung hatte der „Große Bruder“ sogar eine deutliche Hand_im_Spiel), das wurde fraglos auch als nützlich dafür angesehen, das deutsche Kapital nicht allzu eigenständig und übermütig werden zu lassen. Die Politik und insbesondere die „Dienste“ wurden mit Leuten durchsetzt, die „auf zwei Schultern tragen“, dabei war auch ihre Belastung durch die Nazi-Vergangenheit der Abhängigkeit nützlich (siehe_Gehlen u. a.). Allzu politisch „Linkem“ wurden die Flügel gestutzt, wie mit dem Verbot der KPD und den „Radikalen-Erlassen“. Aber, man kann es nicht anders sagen, die Menschen in der „BRD“ lebten insgesamt im Allgemeinen gesichert, sowie in relativem Wohlstand und individuell so frei, wie sonst nirgendwo auf der Welt – eine „Insel der Seeligen“. Die letztlich „künstliche“ Grundlage dafür war aber kaum jemanden ersichtlich, wenn es überhaupt jemanden interessierte. Dabei soll der Fleiß und die Disziplin beim Wiederaufbau durch die Bürger – in West und Ost – nicht kleingeredet werden.

Nach dem Ende des ersten Kalten Krieges und der Wiedervereinigung Deutschlands wurde zwar ein Teil des „Schaufensters“ abgeräumt, aber die Vorteile der Strahlkraft Deutschlands für die US-Machtelite waren weiterhin groß, insbesondere, um die ehemaligen osteuropäischen Mitgliedsstaaten des Ostblocks in den Orbit zu ziehen. Dies gelang aufgrund der Illusion: schaut, wie „toll“ es nun auch den Menschen der ehemaligen DDR geht, auch wenn bald viele dort es nicht unbedingt so empfanden! Auch in den Fragen des historischen „Systemvergleichs“ spielt gerade (das geteilte) Deutschland eine wichtige, eben auch irreführende Rolle. Dies beruht stark darauf, dass die ungleichen Voraussetzungen beider deutscher Staaten nicht berücksichtigt werden, wie auch beim Vergleich Westeuropas und Osteuropas.

Angemerkt werden muss hier auch, dass das konstruierte Narrativ zu Nachkriegsdeutschland auch nützlich war, der Bevölkerung des Westens die Illusion zu vermitteln, die US-Kriege sollten in den angegriffenen Ländern so eine Erfolgsstory für die Menschen dort werden, wie der „Neubau Nachkriegsdeutschlands“ unter US-Führung.

Die Zukunft Deutschlands wie EU-Europas mag anderes bereithalten. Der Kalte Krieg Nummer zwei ist da, die Ausdehnung des „Westens“ auf dem europäischen Kontinent bis zum Äußersten vorläufig praktisch_abgeschlossen (was nicht ausschließt, dass das US-Imperium von weiterer Ausdehnung nach Osten mit der Niederringung Russlands und dessen Zersplitterung träumt). Zwar ist die Wirkung der „Maske“ auf einige Teile der Welt noch „nützlich“, aber nun steht wohl für die US-Macht im Vordergrund, Europa, und speziell auch Deutschland, als Aufmarschgebiet „gen Osten“ und ggf. als kriegerisches Vorfeld zu nutzen.

Für die Auseinandersetzung der USA mit dem erklärten Hauptgegner China und seinem Umfeld spielt die „deutsche Maske“ eine noch weit geringere Rolle. China hat bewiesen, dass sein System in der Lage ist, einen großen Teil seiner Bevölkerung ohne exzessive Plünderung des globalen Südens aus der Armut herauszuführen. Ohne das chinesische System idealisieren zu wollen, denke ich, für viele Menschen in der Welt wird nicht doppelbödiges, eurozentrisches „Werte-Geschwafel“ den Ausschlag geben, sondern die Frage, was politische Entwicklungen in einem Land für die große Zahl seiner Menschen an Wohl bringen.

Wachen die Bürger in den europäischen Gesellschaften und speziell Deutschland nicht auf, und zwingen ihre Politiker nicht, eine eigene, von den USA unabhängige Rolle (für die sie erst einmal ihre bisherige Rolle begreifen müssten) zu entwickeln, sieht die Zukunft wahrlich finster aus!

Eine abschließende Bemerkung muss aber auch noch sein: Nachdem Deutschland mit Hilfe von Teilen einer skrupellosen US-Machtelite im vorigen Jahrhundert zum faschistischen Monster geworden war, das Horror über große Teile der „alten Welt“ gebracht hatte, hatte man salbungsvoll dem Nazi-Wahn abgeschworen. Jetzt wird Deutschland zusammen mit EU-Europa raffiniert zum Schutzpatron ukrainischen Nazi-Wahns gemacht. Einem ukrainischen Präsidenten, der sich im Bett mit dieser Nazibande befindet, wird im Bundestag mit stehenden Ovationen gehuldigt. „Sportpalast 2.0“?! Für Menschen, die von außen auf dieses Geschehen hier schauen, mag die Maske wohl endgültig fallen!
